It’s true the little Ozark tourist town of Eureka Springs may slow down just a bit during January, but the town heats up on Kings Day through February when Eureka Gras Mardi Gras activities get cooking.

Thanks to Dan Ellis, who relocated to Eureka Springs from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina savaged his home, Eureka Springs has learned to love Mardi Gras, that festival of over-the-top excess and partying that yields to Lent and its traditional month of austerity.

This year, Ellis and his Krewe of Krazo (that’s Ozark spelled backwards ), have arranged for four weeks of madcap Carnival activities. Called Eureka Gras Mardi Gras, the 7th annual festival will be longer and more fun-filled than any that preceded it.

The Mardi Gras flame started burning     early in January, with the Kickoff introduction of the Royal Court,  and this year’s King and Queen, Scott Smith and Mary Popovac, at the Rowdy Beaver Den
Tavern and Restaurant.  At the end of the month, floats were christened and sponsors honored. This year’s theme, My-O-Myan, reflected in costumes and float designs, is a good-natured poke at the fuss about the Mayan Calendar ending in 2012. A float created by jack Jack Miller, carrying a giant Jaguar, a sacrificial virgin and a huge pyramid, helps set the tone of the parade.

Traditional Mardi Gras parades feature “A Second Line” of marchers who step and dance

This is truly a New Orleans style Mardi Gras setting in the beautiful Ozarks within the Downtown area of Eureka Springs, Arkansas.
This event, in its seventh year has grown phenomenally and is now deep rooted in the Victorian Town with up and down curly-Q streets.
Sponsored by the Crescent and Basin Park Hotels and the Rowdy Beaver Restaurant with the firm committments of the banking community including Arvest, Community First and Cornerstone.
